Drywall and Its Uses

It is a construction material that is used to create ceilings and walls. It is popular because it is easy to install and repair when damaged. Application is the process of installing a wall without the use of plaster. Before gypsum boards were introduced in the market, most houses used plaster. Now customers use drywall as their primary wall covering. Our customers often use it to create beautiful feature pieces on their walls or ceilings. We have also used these materials to create built-in shelving units that serve a purpose as a book shelf. Even as movie theatre surround that holds many DVD and blue ray cases, including varieties of sports and gaming memorabilia.

The main problem of using plaster is that it is time-consuming to apply, and it is expensive because it needs more labor and several coats to make a perfect finish. To illustrate the advantages of using drywall, look at it this way; it takes an average of 3 weeks to finish a house when using plaster. However, when using drywall, the same house can be finished in 5 days. Plaster is an older way of doing things and drywall in the more modern efficient way of completing the project and meeting the customers needs. Needs such as construction schedules and contractor deadlines. Maybe you have family coming to visit in a few months are you are getting the old office converted into a wonderful new guest bedroom. Somewhere your family and friends want to come visit and stay.

There are many other advantages of using gypsum boards. Some of these are:

  • They have higher fire ratings making them suitable for use in residential homes. Safety first!
  • They are faster to repair and maintain.
  • It is more energy efficient when compared to plaster or other styles provided.

How is Drywall Made?

Most sheetrock boards in the world are made from a mineral known as gypsum. This white mineral looks like sand though those with impurities can appear pink, gray, or yellow. The gypsum boards have good fire ratings because they contain water in crystalline form. When exposed to fire, the water crystals will destabilize and evaporate, keeping the board dry. It is important to understand how it is made because choosing the correct line for your residence or commercial property. It allows you to weigh the options based off the standards and regulations needed for the application.

Once gypsum has been mined, it is mixed with several additives such as paper pulp, starch, and emulsifier or any other thickening agents as deemed fit. The mixture is then blended into a thick paste, which is spread on thick manila papers. The thick manila paper passes through ovens that heat the sheets to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Once heated, the material becomes ready for use in domestic and industrial facilities.

As technology evolves, new trends are emerging in the drywall industry. For example, residential homeowners, like yourself are preferring eco-friendly gypsum boards because they are environmentally friendlier. Factors they consider are, disposal of old board, long-term sustainability and cost effectiveness.

Our Services

Residential Services

Drywall Repair Services

When was the last time you had your house maintained? Did the plumber come and cut a section of your wall and leave without repairing it? Don’t worry; we have you sorted. Did the kids have a party while you were out for dinner and a hold appeared from the evenings festivities? Leaving potentially exposed wires and insulation creates opportunities for greater issues. Open sections can create areas of exposed wires which increase the possibility of electrocution. These same open drywall holes or exposed sections can also allow in moisture. Moisture that could lead to mold and other fungi's hazardous to your health. We offer several gypsum board repair services such as:

Patching of Wall Holes

Either intentional or unintentional impacts cause most wall holes. An example of a deliberate impact is when you pin a picture on the wall. Alternatively, an example of an unintentional hole is one created when a doorknob crashes into a wall. The type of patch needed will depend on the size of the hole. Our drywallers are well trained to properly assess the correct size and keep costs low for our clients.

For holes larger than 6 inches wide, we advise that a new board is installed instead of using a mesh patch. We prefer to patch holes that are 6 inches or less because the patch mesh will hold firmly, closely resembling brand new. Once the patch is in place, a joint compound will be applied, and the wall will look brand new. We offer this as a last resort for larger holes and when considering the structural integrity of wall as a whole. At the end of the day we will do what is best for the client and project application.

Drywall Installation & Remodeling

Are you moving into a new home and would like to have your house remodeled, we install several sheetrock boards adhering to the latest international standards. Some of the gypsum boards that we install include:

Green Board: Suitable for use in moisture-prone areas such as bathroom and kitchen areas. Reduce the chance of black mold and other respiratory infectious molds.

Soundproof Drywall: Suitable for people who live near a noisy market center or street. Also commonly used in homes with large families or rooms like in-home movie theaters.

Wall Demolition Services

Sheetrock demolition is a time-consuming and can be a challenging process. For example, you require hand gloves and a face mask because of the jobsite hazards. One of these hazards is the dust might cause respiratory illness if you breathe it. Having the correctly rated gloves is also important because the possibility of getting cut or some type of impalement. Also, we have the right tools for the job, such as end snips, a reciprocating saw, and a flat bar. Some of the tools needed to do the demolition to a top quality level, with no damage elsewhere, requires special training. We ensure our specialists are fully trained in all the necessary hand tools and powers tools on the worksite. Attempting to use these tools and removing a wall from your home could cause costly injuries or damage.

Injuries aside, if the incorrect wall is removed or improperly without the proper process, extreme risks are being taken. Load bearing walls are structurally crucial for your property. They transfer the weight from one floor to another within the structure. Even some well practiced contractors are known to have made mistakes. This is not a process we recommend attempting without the proper knowledge or training. Another factor you will most certainly want to consider is the wiring that often runs through walls. Along with the possible plumbing you may find. Removing a wall isn't as simple as going at it with a sledge hammer. To get a professional quote, please reach out today at

Why might someone get a wall removed?

We are have had all varying requests from clients, both residential and commercial alike. With goals of expanding a space they don't currently use and mesh it with one they frequently make use of. These can be spaces like spare bedrooms that no longer get used and who's adjoining wall is next to the kitchen, which is undersized and used daily. Other projects can be changing around old file rooms and converting them into usable office space for a sale 'bull' pen complete with cubicles. Maybe you are a business owner with a store front and the space next to you has become available. Let us help you expand your store and stay within budget. As part of the Halifax community, it is important to us to help keep local businesses thriving.

Water Damage Repair

This is another common problem that residential property owners experience. However, our services are not limited to residential, but also into varying commercial pursuits. You can tell whether you have a water problem in your wall by just looking at it. If you notice moisture or peeling paint, then there is a water problem, and it must be fixed. Water issues consist of leaky pipes, condensation from improper insulation or maybe your neighbor who lives upstairs left the water running and flooded their apartment. The sooner that you can recognize a leak or possible water problem the better. They only become more damaging to the property the longer they go unattended.

Failure to fix the problem may result in the growth of mold, which is a health hazard. The damage will be more costlier to repair in the future no matter where it comes from. On top of the damage, mold is extremely bad for your health. So, leaving it longer without being fixed, risks the health of your family and friends who visit. The health concerns should be a top priority, regardless how unsightly it may look.

Some of the possible destruction you could see on the walls or ceilings from leaky water is:

  • Discoloration
  • Soft-spots to the touch
  • Spongy or wet to touch
  • Ripples in the drywall
  • Loosening clay
  • Peeling paint
  • Signs of mold
  • Puddles of water near or around area

Popcorn Ceiling Removal

If you lived in a house built in the 1970s-1980s, you probably have a popcorn ceiling. Stucco was the new craze back then, but now things are different. We have gypsum ceilings that offer better insulation properties and are more aesthetically appealing thanks to the different types of finishing they can accommodate. More commonly we are removing these older texturized ceilings than putting them in. Originally popcorn ceilings were started to help decrease labor time and costs.

Removing a popcorn ceiling all by yourself is a dangerous job, especially if it has asbestos. Asbestos is considered a carcinogenic material that causes cancer. We will remove the popcorn ceiling and make sure that the room is all cleaned up. That particles do not find their way into your sofa or carpets. It is also crucial to keep it out of your air circulation and venting system. Safety is of the utmost importance. It is highly recommend to higher a professional complete the work because if a step is missed you are taking a huge health and financial risk.

Drywall Crack Repair

Our drywall crack repair services specialize in ensuring that visible cracks are not seen and do not grow in size. Most cracks result from either a change in seasonal temperatures or a structural problem with the property, such as framing deterioration or foundation settlement. If you don't know where the problem arose from, it is suggested that you have it professionally inspected to decrease the risk of other possible damage occuring.

At other times, cracks on gypsum boards can be due to cosmetic defects such as cracked tiles or damaged doorways. Though this is not a cause of concern, you must have it checked out as soon as you can. Unqualified contractors have the notion that when the crack is filled, they do not have to tape it. Failure to tape a crack only makes the crack appear after a short period resulting in the property owner incurring more costs in the future. We take every precaution to make sure our work lasts through the years.

Commercial Drywall Finishing

Commercial is such a large descriptive word to describe our customers. This can mean industrial warehouses, new residential apartment complexes, schools and hospitals. Maybe you have a retail storefront or large parkade with covered common areas for people to wait by an elevator. Once you really start looking around you, drywall is everywhere. No matter how big or small the project we are glad to help and provide many options for finishing.

There are several types of commercial finishing. The standards range from level 0 to level 5. Level 0 finishing is the most basic type of finishing in the market. It is mostly used for temporary structures and has no decorations. Also, Level 0 finishing does not use any joint tape. Level 1 finishing is mostly used in areas that are not accessible by members of the public. Here, joints are not covered by tape, and a compound is not used. Level 2 finishing is applied in parking garages and warehouses. In this type of finish, a joint tape can be used.

Level 3 and 4 consists of a more refined finish because they are installed in areas where the public will easily see them. Level 3 uses a joint compound and has no visible tool marks and ridges like level 2. Level 4 is among the best finishing in the market and more expensive than level 3. It consists of 3 coats, including primer. The last level of finishing is Level 5. It is the most Expensive type of finishing and is suitable for use in the following areas:

  • Where you want to apply an enamel paint
  • Areas where gloss paint will be used
  • Areas where non-textured flat paint is used

Taping and Finishing Services

Taping and finishing is the process in which drywall sheets are held together, either using a mesh or fiberglass tape. The seams are then covered with taping mad in a process known as taping and mudding. Once the compound has been applied, it is then sanded to ensure the edges are smooth. Our specialists are highly trained to perform this task with the upmost care and precision. To an untrained hand taping and smoothing out can get frustrating and you risk leaving unsightly lines once the job is complete.

The main advantage of taping and finishing is that joints and nail holes become invisible to the naked eyes creating an attractive wall. For commercial and residential projects, we prefer to use both paper and fiberglass drywall tapes. It will more directly be related to the project on which is used at the time of installment.

Most people do not know the difference between paper tapes and fiberglass tapes. Though both of them are suitable for taping gypsum boards, they have several characteristics that make them different in their application. For example, paper tape is non-adhesive, meaning it must be embedded with a joint compound to stick on the wall’s surface.

Using paper tape slows down the installation process because if it is not evenly squeezed out, air bubbles might be trapped inside. Another difference is that, even though it is not stronger than fiberglass mesh, it is non-elastic, meaning it will create stronger joints.

On the other hand, fiberglass tape does not require a joint compound to be embedded because it is self-adhesive. We prefer to use fiberglass because it speeds up the installation process reducing costs for the client. Rest assured we use the best quality products.

Drywall Mudding Tools

Mixing Paddle

This tool is attached to a power drill to make it faster to mix drywall compound. Without this tool, it would be impossible to remove lumps in the mixture and to have a smooth and consistent blend.

Mud Pan

A mud pan makes it easy for our installers to scoop mud with their knife. They dip the knife into the pan and scoop the joint compound.

A Taping Knife

It is impossible to achieve a subtle finish without a taping knife. The best taping knife should be 6 inches but not more than 15 inches wide. The 6-inch knife is suitable for applying the first layer of mud, while a 10-inch blade should be used to apply the second and third coat.

Corner Trowel

This is our favorite tool, especially when finishing a property that has several corners that require tackling. This is because it enables us to smooth two walls at the same time.

We offer the following taping and finishing services:

  • Drywall taping and finishing for both commercial and residential properties
  • Popcorn ceiling removal
  • Gypsum board patch repair
  • Level 4 and 5 finishes
